A-Level History Visit to London

On the eventful day of June 22, 2023, our enthusiastic Year 12 History students embarked on an educational adventure to London, immersing themselves in the rich historical and political landscape of the city.

The day began bright and early as the students arrived at The Houses of Parliament. Thrilled by the prospect of witnessing democracy in action, they took their seats in the public gallery to observe the live Cabinet questions session. Engrossed in the proceedings, they had the privilege of hearing Oliver Dowden, the Deputy Prime Minister, and other key speakers respond to pressing inquiries. The students' engagement was palpable as they absorbed the intricacies of political discourse unfolding before their eyes.

From there, the group made their way to Portcullis House, traversing the iconic underground tunnel that connects to Parliament Square. Here, they were fortunate to engage in a thought-provoking 90-minute question and answer session with Ian Byrne, MP for West Derby. Delving into a range of topics such as spending and welfare cuts, challenges specific to the city of Liverpool, education and the curriculum, the impact of class on opportunities and outcomes, as well as issues pertaining to gender and Brexit, the students displayed their knowledge and understanding of key contemporary issues. Their insightful queries and spirited debate reflected their dedication to the subject matter and their intellectual growth.

As the group bid farewell to Portcullis House, an unexpected encounter awaited them. They had the privilege of being introduced to Angela Rayner, the Deputy Leader for the Labour Party. This serendipitous meeting left many of the students awe-struck and rendered speechless. The opportunity to interact with such a prominent figure in politics was a truly remarkable experience that left a lasting impression on the students.

Continuing their day of exploration, the students embarked on a guided tour of Westminster Abbey. They were granted access to usually off-limits areas, including the quire stalls and the tombs of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, the first Tudor monarchs. This behind-the-scenes glimpse into history provided a deeper appreciation for the architectural marvels and historical significance of this iconic landmark.

To add a touch of adventure to the day, the group embarked on a delightful cruise along the River Thames, admiring the city's major sites from the water. The serene journey allowed them to witness London's iconic landmarks in a unique and refreshing way, providing a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

To culminate this eventful day, the students savored a well-deserved meal at Pizza Hut, conveniently located next to the film premiere of Mission Impossible 8. While some caught a glimpse of the renowned actor Tom Cruise, it was fascinating to observe that many of the students were more inspired by their encounter with Angela Rayner than the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

Throughout the excursion, our students exhibited exemplary behavior, showcasing their maturity, enthusiasm, and dedication to their studies. Their engagement in the sessions, their insightful questions, and their respectful conduct were a testament to their exceptional character. As a result, they not only represented themselves admirably but also brought pride to their families and the College.

Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate the visit of Ian Byrne, MP for West Derby, to our college on 28 September. This occasion will offer another opportunity for our students to continue their debates and deepen their understanding of pressing issues. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ian Byrne for his invaluable support of our school and the local community.
