Artist of the Week 2013 

ARTIST - ERIN O'BRIEN

Insect studies

Students within year 7 have studied a range of basic techniques and skills this term. The use of symmetry and pointillism has been developed within the topic of insects.

Erin has developed her skills with the media watercolour and has produced a delicate study of a butterfly. She has captured the subtle colours in the insects pattern and wings. Following research and gaining knowledge on pointillism used by artists such as Roy Liechtenstein and George Seurat. Erin has added pointillism to enhance her artwork which has resulted in a skilful and fluent response.

ARTIST - LAKEISHA MUSANHU

Day of the Dead

As part of the college GCSE Fine Art course, students are studying the topic of 'Day of the Dead'. Work has involved observational studies of skulls and the research of the Mexican festival and celebration of 'All Saints Day'. Sugar skulls designs have been developed from previous skull and research artwork. Lakeisha has produced a range of sugar skulls. This design is a vibrant and imaginative example. Lakeisha has used a range of techniques, skills, and media which has resulted in a creative and eye-catching design. Future development will be in the form of a ceramic mask.

ARTIST - PAIGE JENKINSON

African Art

Students within year 9 are studying African Art. The topic has developed from artist research studies and investigations into African masks. Students are developing a range of techniques and skills with a variety of media.

Paige has produced an eye-catching and colourful image of an African mask. Her observation and skills with the media of coloured pencil have captured the features and imagination which are produced in African artwork.

ARTIST - SOPHIE WILSON

Development of Natural Form

Artist reference sheet – Barbara Fox

For unit 1 of their A level Fine Art course students are asked to explore the theme of 'Natural Form', work produced is graded for the examination board AQA.

Students have researched the contemporary artist Barbara Fox and have developed a range of studies in the style of her work. Sophie has produced delicate watercolour studies capturing the gentleness of each flower petal and the pastels shades which are often evident in Barbara Fox artwork.

Development of Natural Form

Media – Wet Materials, Acrylic and Watercolour paint

For unit 1 of their A level Fine Art course students are asked to explore the theme of 'Natural Form', work produced is graded for the examination board AQA.

Students have researched the contemporary artist Barbara Fox and have developed a range of floral studies from this inspiration. Olivia has produced studies using acrylic paint and watercolours. Refinement and experimentation with media techniques and processes enabled a highly developed, skilful and fluent response from a variety of primary source flowers.

Development of African Masks

Artist Reference Sheet - African Art

Students within year 9 are studying the topic of African Art. Within this topic they have have studied traditional African masks, knowledge and understanding of pattern, line and colour has been required. Sarah has produced a range of drawings using her imagination and creativity developing her own response to her studies. Refinement and experimentation with the media of coloured pencil and has enabled a highly developed, skilful response.

For unit 1 of their A level Fine Art course students are being asked to explore the theme of 'Natural Form', work produced is graded for the examination board AQA. Charlotte produced a research study on the artist Georgia O Keeffe. She has explored a range of studies, combined with information about the artist's life and work. Refinement and experimentation with mixed media techniques and processes has enabled a highly developed, skilful and fluent response.

Day of the Dead

Artist Reference Sheet - Mixed media

As part of students GCSE Fine Art course, students are required to demonstrate a high level of observational drawing skills, Millie has produced numerous studies of skulls for her Day of the Dead project. She has shown thoughtful refinement and experimented with a wide range of media, techniques and processes referring to a range of resources. She has enhanced the finish of her work with careful consideration to her theme with intertwining vines and leaves.

ARTIST - LARISA BOGHIU

African Art

Artist Reference Sheet - Pablo Picasso

Students within year 9 are studying the topic of African Art, Larisa has produced a reference sheet on the artist Picasso. She has researched information about the artist and the impact and influence he has had on modern art. A range of images compliment her written work. To complete the study she has developed some images which are in the style of the artist, capturing the cubist theme with oil pastel and pencil studies. Refinement and experimentation with these media techniques and has enabled a highly developed, skilful and fluent response.

ARTIST - CARLY POWER

African Mask

As part of their GCSE project on African mask design students were asked to create a clay piece as a development from a 2D design to a 3D object.

Carly's mask is an excellent example of a competent and confidently put together piece of ceramics. She has embellished her mask using acrylic paint. Her colours and pattern remains faithful to her initial intentions. She has produced a refined interpretation of her plan which was based on thorough historical and cultural research. Carly won 1st prize at the Annual Art Awards this summer - Well Done Carly!

Natural Form

Media – Oil Pastel

For unit 1 of their A level Fine Art course students were asked to explore the theme of ‘Natural Form’, worked produced was graded for the examination board AQA.

Briyana produced a range of oil pastel studies from a visit to Chester Zoo. Refinement and experimentation with media techniques and processes enabled a highly developed, skilful and fluent response of observational drawings.

ARTIST - SARAH O'MELIA

Natural Form

Sarah has produced a range of studies referring to both primary and secondary sources within the context of nature. A range of mixed media including pencil, watercolour, oil pastel and coloured pencil has enabled texture, pattern and line to capture the beauty of Natural form. Poetic words have enhanced and reinforced the feelings evoked with the chosen illustrations.

Animals

Media – ink and fineliner

For unit 2 of their A level Fine Art course students were asked to choose a topic from a range of options received from the examination board AQA. Animals featuring cultural influences were a popular theme. Abstract interpretation and decorate observational artwork was produced with Nicole's focus on sea life and use of a vibrant colour palette.

Theme Indian culture

Students have been asked to research the theme of Indian culture and produce a piece of work which focuses on pattern and colour of this vibrant culture.

Student's designs are being developed into a 3D sculpture so watch this space for a student's future Sculpture piece.
