MFL

Curriculum Intent

The MFL department is committed to broadening pupils’ understanding of the world and developing strong, life-long linguistic skills. Students are given opportunities to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the target language and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. We offer Spanish at KS3, 4 and 5 and Mandarin is offered to a cohort of students in KS3.

Year 7 

Term 1
Mi vida: In this module students will learn to introduce themselves in Spanish and start to discuss different aspects of their lives. Students will be able to talk about their age, birthdays, personality, siblings and pets.

Term 2
Mi insti: In this module students will cover the topic of school life with a focus on school subjects, opinions, teachers and the time.
Mi familia y mis amigos:This module covers the topics of family and friends. Students will learn more family members, be able to describe themselves and the members of their family and friends. This module also explores the different types of houses and students will then describe where they live.

Term 3
Mi ciudad: In this module we will learn all about my town or city, with a focus on the places in the city and what you do in the city. Students will be able to order food in a café and will be able to express what they are going to do in the future.

Year 8 

Term 1
Mis vacaciones: This module explores the topic of holidays with a particular focus on past holidays. Students will discuss where they went on holiday using the past tense and will be able to say what they did there giving their opinions.
Todo sobre mi vida: In this module students will talk more about their own preferences with regards to using their mobile phones, music and TV. They will be able to say what they did in the past.

Term 2
¡A comer!: In this module students will discuss all things food related. They will give opinions about different food and drink, and will learn about the different meals and mealtimes in Spain and how they compare to their own meals. Students will be able to order typical Spanish food in a restaurant using the formal address ‘usted’ and will be able to say what food they are going to take to a party using the future tense.
¿Qué hacemos?: In this module students will make arrangements to go out with friends and be able to give excuses as to why they can’t go out. They will discuss how they get ready to go out and talk about what they are going to wear using the future tense.

Term 3
Operación verano: This module focuses on summer and students will discuss what there is to do in different tourist destinations. This module allows students to explore different areas in Spain, talk about holiday homes and ask for and give directions. Finally students will discuss summer camps using three different tenses.

Year 9 

Term 1
Somos así: In this module students will develop their opinions and be able to give opinions and justifications on a wide range of issues. Students will also talk about what they do in a typical week, talk about films and birthdays. Students will be able to talk about these topics in the past, present and future tenses.
¡Oriéntate!: This module explores the world of work. Students will learn different jobs in Spanish and say what you have to do in each of these jobs. Students will be able to describe a typical day in different jobs and will be able to discuss their future prospects.

 

Term 2
En forma: This module explores the topic oh healthy living. Students will discuss healthy diets, an active lifestyle and talk about getting fit. Students will also talk about illnesses.
Jóvenes en acción: In this module students start to tackle some more challenging topics as they learn about human rights all over the world and the lives of others. This module allows students to consider the lives of other young people in different countries, problems with the environment and how we can protect it and allows students to consider ways in which they can help make the world a better place.

Term 3
Una aventura en Madrid: This module explores the Spanish culture with a focus on Madrid and students will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge on this Spanish city.
