“Bringing nature into the classroom can kindle a fascination and passion for the diversity of life on earth and can motivate a sense of responsibility to safeguard it.” David Attenborough.
Our geography team has a passion for their subject and for sharing that with our students. We spoke with them to find out a little more about the department.
Who we are...
We are a small and close department. We all love our subject and the students that we teach. We have a strong bond as a team and work together to get the best outcomes for our students. Our mission as a department is to enable our students to be “Stewards of the World”.
As a team this is what we do best...
Our biggest strengths are our teamwork and enthusiasm for the subject. We share all our resources, knowledge and help each other every day. We play to our strengths, sharing our individual skills and talents. We really do rely on each other, this means our students get the best experience in the classroom, they have the shared knowledge of the department being brought to them by the teacher in front of them. We really love opening the horizons of our students and Geography is a fantastic way of opening up the world within the classroom.
What's happening in Geography?
There is always something to look forward to in Geography. Year 9 have recently all taken part in a fieldwork trip to Chester Zoo. This was the first whole year group trip for the department this year and it was a resounding success. Foreign trips are the next thing on the list to plan with previous successful trips to France and Italy we are excitedly planning the next Geography adventure. Year 10 this term will be taking part in fieldwork and visiting an Eric Wright construction site close to the new Everton football stadium on the docks as part of an employer encounter experience.
Why should someone join the Geography team?
In our department we keep our students at the heart of everything we do. We love our subject and are passionate about it and share that with them. We are a forward-thinking and innovative department and look for solutions. We wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
Who teaches the hardest topic?
We all agreed the toughest topic is studied at A-level and is Global governance and global commons. Studying areas that don’t belong to a specific country or people and how they are cared for and governed. Taught by Miss Armstrong this fascinating but tricky topic has hit the top spot for toughest topic.
Why did you choose to study Geography?
Mrs Loftus-McGinty “Geography encompasses many different subjects like Maths, Science and History so I was always interested in it. You can never be bored when studying Geography”
Mrs Welsh “I enjoyed Geography at school and had a brilliant teacher. I really enjoy human geography and studied that for my degree”
Miss Armstrong “I had a brilliant A-Level teacher, I looked forward to every lesson. I had to choose between languages and Geography. I love how nothing in our subject stays the same, how we can see how the world was made and that studying Geography has allowed and encouraged me to travel the world!”
What is the key to your success as a team?
We are a very close team and our success is down to our communication, honesty and openness. We all give each other feedback, share our resources and offer each other constructive feedback within the department. This allows us to drive improvement for our students and brings success.
Most surprising thing about the Geography team?
We were all really surprised to find out that we had all been on holiday to the same place at the same time but didn’t work together at the time. It’s true that great minds think alike!
