A Level  - English Literature

Course Overview

A Level English Literature offers a chance to deeply explore a rich and diverse collection of literary works across various genres, periods, and cultures. This A Level will make you more independent, inquisitive and analytical, engaging with complex ideas and critical thinking. The distribution of the A Level courses allows for each unit to be revisited across the course and skills to be mastered.

How is the course assessed?

Paper 1: Aspects of Tragedy (40% of final grade)
Texts studied:

  • Othello by William Shakespeare

  • Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy

  • Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller


Paper 2: Political and Social Protest Writing (40% of final grade)
Texts studied:

  • The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

  • A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen

  • Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake


NEA Coursework (20% of final grade)
Study of 1 prose (1500 words) and 1 poetry text (1500 words) using the critical anthology to view through a critical lens.
