The A Level Maths course is designed to build upon and deepen the mathematical knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE, extending them into the more advanced disciplines of pure mathematics, mechanics, and statistics at A-level. It aims to develop a thorough understanding of mathematical processes, nurturing both confidence and enjoyment in the subject while laying a solid foundation for further academic study.
Students will be encouraged to enhance their problem-solving abilities, making meaningful connections between different branches of mathematics and applying these skills in a wide range of practical and theoretical contexts. Emphasis is placed on recognising the relevance of mathematics within the wider world, the workplace, and society as a whole. Throughout the course, students will be equipped with the analytical and reasoning skills necessary to meet the demands of A-level examinations and to thrive in future mathematical pursuits.
Transferable life skills include problem-solving, logical thinking, resilience, mathematical writing, working systematically, spatial reasoning, data justification and independent thinking.
Paper 1: Pure 1 (duration 2 hours)
Paper 2: Pure 2 (duration 2 hours)
Paper 3: Statistics & mechanics (duration 2 hours)
Knowledge of mathematics is fundamental to many areas of higher education and there is a national shortage of trained mathematicians.
Research has shown that a degree in mathematics can give graduates an increased earning capacity and provides career choices which are the envy of many other graduates.
