The AQA A-Level Fine Art course is designed to develop students’ creative, practical, and critical skills through the exploration of a wide range of fine art practices. Students engage with disciplines such as painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media, while learning to express personal ideas and develop their own artistic voice.
Students are encouraged to experiment with materials, explore cultural and historical contexts, and reflect critically on their work and that of others. The course fosters independent thinking, problem-solving, and a deep appreciation of visual arts, preparing students for further study or careers in creative industries. No prior qualification in art is required, but a passion for creativity and commitment to developing practical skills are essential.
The AQA A-Level Fine Art course is assessed through two components, both marked by teachers and moderated by AQA. Assessment is based on four key Assessment Objectives (AOs):
AO1 – Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.
AO2 – Refine work by exploring and experimenting with materials, techniques, and processes.
AO3 – Record ideas, observations, and insights relevant to intentions.
AO4 – Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions.
Both components below are marked out of 96, with equal weight given to each Assessment Objective. Final grades are awarded based on the total combined mark.
Component 1:
Personal Investigation (60% of A-Level) A practical portfolio on a chosen theme.
Includes a written personal study (1,000–3,000 words) that connects with practical work.
Assessed holistically across all four AOs.
Component 2:
Externally Set Assignment (40% of A-Level) Students choose from a set of exam questions issued by AQA.
Includes a preparatory period and a 15-hour supervised final piece.
Assessed across the same four AOs.
