At St John Bosco Arts College, we are thrilled to offer our students the opportunity to participate in the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award. This program is a remarkable adventure, helping young people broaden their horizons and face new challenges.
The DofE Award consists of four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and Expedition. These sections encourage students to commit to personal growth and community involvement:
Volunteering: Give back to the community and make a difference.
Physical: Enhance your fitness and overall well-being.
Skills: Develop new talents or refine existing ones.
Expedition: Plan and undertake adventurous journeys.
The Bronze Award takes a minimum of 6 months to complete, while the Silver Award requires at least 12 months. Through these activities, students demonstrate commitment, responsibility, and a strong sense of community.
Since launching its Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme in 2023, St. John Bosco has provided students with the opportunity to challenge themselves, develop new skills and experience the rewards of outdoor adventure.
All DofE expeditions take place in and around Rivington, where students navigate a variety of terrain, including reservoirs, open countryside and moorland. As part of their expedition, participants complete a series of walks, camp overnight, pitch their own tents and prepare their own meals. These experiences help students develop resilience, independence, teamwork and leadership skills, while building confidence and creating lasting memories.
The programme has continued to go from strength to strength since its launch. In 2023, 25 students enrolled on the Bronze Award, with an impressive 22 successfully achieving it.
In 2024, 11 of those Bronze Award holders progressed to the Silver Award, successfully completing the expedition element of the programme and taking on new challenges along the way.
Participation continued to grow in 2025, with 31 students enrolling for the Bronze Award and 23 achieving the award.
Building on this success, May 2026 saw a further 22 students achieve their Bronze Award, while 12 students successfully completed their Silver Award.
The continued growth of the Duke of Edinburgh programme at St. John Bosco is a testament to the commitment, enthusiasm and determination of our students. We look forward to seeing many more students take part in future expeditions and achieve their DofE Awards.
