Local MP visits St John Bosco Arts College 

Pupils at St John Bosco Arts College, Croxteth, welcomed MP for Liverpool West Derby, Ian Byrne, on Thursday, 28 September. 

Ian visited St John Bosco to speak to pupils about several topics. The visit was arranged by Bosco’s history teacher, Karen McDonnell, following a Year 12 visit to the Houses of Parliament in June 2023. 

Whilst at the school, Ian was keen to discuss his work on the ‘Right to Food Campaign’, which aims to make access to food a legal right for all. Just two weeks ago, Ian tabled a motion in Parliament in support of Right to Food Week 2023, which began on Monday, 18 September. 

The national week of action aims to increase awareness of food poverty in the UK and ensure the collective demand for a Right to Food is heard. Across the week, a range of activities took place, including banner-making. The week was concluded with a Hunger March, which took place in the city on Saturday, 23 September.  

 The campaign also emphasises providing free school meals for all children up to age 19.

Ian Byrne said: “It is extremely important that young people are educated on the issues facing communities across the UK. If we can teach our young people about democracy and instil a sense of empowerment, they are more likely to become active community members and support positive change.

“The students at St John Bosco Arts College were very inquisitive and asked some fantastic questions. It is wonderful to see so many young minds excited and inspired to take action.”

During a lively Q&A session with students, Ian also discussed his ongoing involvement in Hillsborough and his role in supporting the fight for justice for the 97 victims and their families.

Year 12 and 13 history students and the Bosco student council also got the opportunity to find out more about Ian’s role as an MP and what led him to take this career path. 

The visit left a lasting impact on all at St John Bosco, with staff and students alike feeling inspired and driven to be active members of their community. 

Head boy at Bosco said: “It was interesting to learn more about the role of an MP and how their work can directly impact the local community. We learnt about the free school meal campaign for Liverpool schools and how proactive MPs are in the local community.”

Through opportunities with local figures, organisations, and more, we can support our students to explore new topics and issues, ultimately helping them gain a deeper understanding of the world.
